Vedana, Thursday Nights

May 17, 2012 in Events

Seth Nichols and Kevin Callison, the brains and muscle behind the Thursday night weekly, have been doing a nice job developing community around Vedana Thursdays .

Taking place in the upstairs of the Funky Buddha, the two of them usually host a guest DJ each week, playing individually, then tag team sets around said featured guests. The two of them have quite exquisite tastes in music, in particular the techno music. They both play all vinyl, which, you know, makes us non-all vinyl guys feel like we’re cheating…well not really at all, as in the end it is all about output, but they both mix a mean piece of wax.

Last week, I had the joy of playing tunes from 11-12:30 on a warm, blustery evening. The upstairs of the Buddha is a terrific space, mostly open air and a cozy size. Kevin had great vision with the visuals, using three projectors, he engulfed most of the room with a National Geographic like film of nature. A good part of  it was projected on to white sheets, that were  neatly hung opposite of the DJ booth. The result was almost a third of that wall was moving and swimming with the film, while there was a warm glow cast across the top of the dance floor…well played Kev! He also through down a techno set to open the evening, that was right on the money. There were about twenty five people in the room as I went on, a nice little crowd stayed and conversed in the lounging area around the dance floor. It’s always enjoyable to provide a back drop to a setting where it is mostly conversation, while attempting to coax people on to the dance floor.  Especially in this relaxed setting at an earlier point in the night, deeper textures seem to go over well. Towards the end I ramped it more into techno land, as a late burst of boozers stumbled in and instantly began making shapes on the dance floor. Seth and Kevin tagged for the duration and openend the throttle up, keeping everyone there until everyone was told to leave at 2:00 a.m.

Another great angle these two fine hosts play, is inviting a local artist in each week to display and sell their work, some doing live painting as the night carries on…we picked up some cool art and I will update the post with that particular artists’ contact information. The night is refreshingly unpretentious and when the Funky Buddha gets their sound system dialed in, this night will only continue forward with tasteful, community building.

Check out our little homie from Boulder, Brent Fosdick. He is the guest tonight and will no doubt hold his own among the two fine hosts of the evening. Splendid drink specials, including $2.00 PBR’s make it that much more of a no brainer.

PMS04 | Playroom Castles | Offthesky

April 19, 2012 in Mixes, Photographic Memory Series

The ever modest and extremely talented Jason Corder, aka ‘Offthesky’ did not feel comfortable penning his own words for the PMS series, which is fine, and because he is one of the nicest guys around, we will do him the favor.

“It is 1985 and I am really proud of the work behind me. Starting with the Picasso up top I threw together in art class, it really brings the room together. Speaking of the room, how about that wall paper? Funky, they don’t make the stuff like they use to. The chalk coordinates on the table are more important than you think, commonly overlooked by the likes of my parents and other important people of the time….and don’t think that confidence written all over my face has nothing to do with the magnificent plastic fortress I’ve created. The white knight is even facing the castle to battle, attention to details…that’s how I roll.”

Vedana Thursdays Return.

April 16, 2012 in News

The Thursday Night Stretch : Vedana @ The Funky Buddha

After a 5 month hiatus, the Thursday night weekly ‘Vedana’ returns to the Funky Buddha Lounge rooftop.  The night features resident DJs Seth Nichols and Kevin Callison playing weekly alongside special guests from local and surrounding scenes.  Vedana is always amped with audio and visual extras that keep the atmosphere exciting and developing.  Each week also features local artists that come in and do  live painting or sculpture pieces, also usually having a few finished products available for purchase.  The rooftop’s open and outdoor space is a perfect setting for the summer music season.  With Colorado’s great weather, and the buzzing downtown scene, it makes for a rich atmosphere.  The bar has some friendly drink specials as well, all night you can take advantage of the ‘beat the clock’ drink special with $1 drinks from 9-10, $2 from 10-11, and so on.  To most people’s surprise there is also a diverse tapas menu available from 6-10pm.  Definitely worth going early for some quality grub and tasty beer on tap!  The music kicks off at 9:00 sharp with deep and minimal tech-house and carries into the dancier sounds as the night progresses.  The weekly special guest plays from 11-12:30 with Kevin and Seth filling in the surrounding areas.  Surely worth stopping in one Thursday as the weekly is set to run for at least the duration of the summer, and there is never a cover charge!

This past weeks featured talent was local mixer Greg Eversoul of Roots along with Scott Keva James from Seattle Washington (www.scottkevajames.com).  Scott is a highly acclaimed video mixer having done the visual mixing at the Decibel Festival from 2006-09.  He also did a Live PA Ableton set of his recent production work to open the night nicely.

CMKY Podcast 13: steofan & Interview for Percussion Lab

April 4, 2012 in Mixes

Check the mix our boy steofan turned in for the Communikey Podcast series. Great school picture by the way, Mom would be proud.

“I was flattered to be given the task for a project such as this, showcasing some of the artists for this years festival. The line up this year is incredibly diverse, yet makes sense as a program which is always a challenge to do. Including good friends on the mix, who are amazingly creative and super fun to hang out with, was a lot of fun too. As usual, looking forward to meeting new friends this year, reconnecting with old ones and coming away inspired. See you all in April!”

APRIL 6, 2012

Our friends at Communikey – the crew responsible for putting on the annual Communikey Festival – have been contributing quality podcasts to Percussion Lab for the last few months, showcasing some of the artists that have performed at their events over the years. Their latest mix, from the Denver-based DJ, producer, promoter and all around mensch steofan (a.k.a. Steven Dermody), is a preview of the killer line-up they’ve locked in for this year’s Communikey Festival, which is slated to kick off on April 25th in Boulder, CO. Touching on everything from textural electronica and wonky synth explorations to driving techno, the mix is a taster for what’s to come. We took a moment to catch up with steofan to discuss his craft, his connection to Communikey, the Colorado scene and the simple pleasures of a freshly mown lawn…

PL: So you’re in Ohio right now. Is that where you’re from? How did you end up in Colorado?

steofan: Yes. I’m in Ohio at the moment with my family, about thirty minutes south of Cleveland in a cozy wooded town. I grew up here after we moved to the States from Dublin, Ireland when I was three. My Dad is actually in Ireland right now visiting. I lived there for most of the year in 2004, student teaching and traveling. I always wanted to live out of Ohio for a stint, so when I came back from overseas, I scoped out either Boulder or Brooklyn. I had friends in both places, but they’re obviously very different locales. After my first visit to Colorado, that was it. I moved to Boulder in 2005 and have been in Denver since 2007. It’s one of the most fantastic places anywhere, in my opinion. A very special place Colorado is.

PL: What do you miss most about the Midwest?

s: The trees…my family and friends…green, fresh cut grass…the people. Midwesterners are very balanced, grounded people. Midwest values are very solid. Well educated, hard working, outgoing, family first…at least that has been my experience with Ohio and I’m thankful for it. I also miss being three hours from Detroit. Now, making the trip out for DEMF is almost as expensive as going to Mutek and involves tons of planning, rather than just winging it, raging it and crawling home exhausted.

PL: How long have you been involved in the electronic music scene? What got you interested in the first place?

s: Around 1997 I started going to raves, in the wide and thriving Midwest rave scene. It had a really big impact on me. Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Toronto…it was vibrant. Jungle, trance, techno, house; literally every genre had a huge and loyal following, and there were focused parties for each. Some nights you would hear everything, then there were massive events with 10-15,000 people in an indoor / outdoor arena. Man, I was hooked…just so excited about it all. The dancing is what really resonated first. They had absolute proper “rave” dancing back then, which is unfortunately something of a lost art. I used to practice my sweet moves for hours, listening to Oakenfold’s ‘Tranceport” in my bedroom at night…classic!

I moved in with a few good friends from Ohio when I got to Boulder; they had decks and a set up there, so I started buying records. From that point I have been on a trajectory with everything, from promoting and DJing to writing, production, project management and blogging. Knee deep in all of it and I wouldn’t want it any other way. So I guess it’s been about fifteen years and going?

PL: What’s your involvement with Communikey? How did you link in with them?

s: One of the first events I attended in Colorado was a Communikey party. As is the case for anyone who has attended one, it didn’t take long to feel the special difference with what these cats were up to. That was 2005, and since then I’ve frequented as many of their events as possible; always coming away inspired, wanting to be more involved each time. 2007 was the first year for the Festival, so I volunteered to do some random tasks. From there I had a foot in the door and began befriending a lot of them…always a useful tactic to get what you want. For the third and fourth editions of the festival, I worked with the Artist Management team and helped out with curation. This year I am heading up Merchandise. I hope to always have some hand in the collective, as the friendships that have resulted from it have been both life long and shared in passion for the music and community. I’m extremely grateful for the experiences and people that Communikey continues to bring, a very progressive bunch of warm souls they are.

PL: You also are a part of the Make Mistakes crew, which operates out of Denver. How does the Denver scene compare to Boulder?

s: Well for one, Denver is much bigger, so there are more people doing more things. I honestly believe Denver is a hotbed for electronic music and music in general. It is bigger than Boulder’s art and music scene, but it’s obviously still smaller then the big coastal city scenes. It is thriving, healthy and collaborative for the most part, which has really helped it grow and thrive. You’ve got the old house heads carrying their torch, solid techno crews, a very large dubstep / DnB scene and a growing experimental / ambient community. So there’s a little bit of everything going on, with loads of options for all night party venues, which is definitely not the case in Boulder, unfortunately.

The four of us behind Make Mistakes are all directly linked to Communikey, some dating back to the beginning of it. We like the finer things in life, including but not limited to gourmet food, good conversation and throwing proper techno parties.

PL: When you were putting together this mix, how did you approach the track selection? Where was it recorded?

s: It was nice to have been given criteria for this mix, which was a due date about two months out and to include only festival artists. Limitations in a limitless creative medium have become more and more interesting. I started by going through the entire list of all festival artists, seeing who had released music to track down. I asked a few friends for any unreleased material for a little extra punch and then got on with programming. I broke the mix into thirds, beginning beatless, moving into slower rhythms and then finishing with faster stuff. This is probably the most comfortable approach to mixing for me personally: genre hopping while trying to keep a clear focus is interesting, with more variance in sound.

The mix was recorded in my living room in Denver on Traktor Scratch. I built a boss DJ booth from a design I found on line, made of all Ikea parts. The door is always open for a jam session!

PL: What are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival?

s: Man, the festival itself is always such a magical time of year. Connecting with dear friends and making new ones is always a treat. Program wise, I’m looking forward to the mastering class with Pole, the live RA Exchanges, Biosphere, Nils Frahm, DJ Sprinkles, Deniz Kurtel, the entire techno jam on Saturday and of the course the park party on Sunday. The park is one of the most golden events on the calendar, year in and year out. Somehow the weather is always smiling on us and everyone is smiling at each other. And I just got the call from coach [Communikey Director Kate Lesta], she put me in on Thursday to play a boutique set in the afternoon; so I’m looking forward to that as well.

Events – Reviewed, Tiefschwarz @ Beta 3.24.12

March 29, 2012 in Events, Reviewed

Having only been a CO resident for a little under 2 years, the novelty of a club the status of Beta,  being in my town of residence has not worn off.  I’m not all Beta jaded just yet, but I surely have developed a few reasons to be.  Often times the 18-21 crowd can be mindless and inconsiderate to those around them that are also trying to enjoy their night.  But my expression here is more to do with my observation of the talent witnessed in the Beta main room prior.  Almost every major headliner, of personal interest, that I have seen play a set in the main room,  has always seemed to adapt their sound in a commercial way to appease the audience.  Or so they think that is what the crowd is yearning for.  Tiefschwarz walked into the Beta main room with a big pair of underground fueled kahuna’s, aiming to please the more astute minded electronic folk, but still sprinkling just the right amounts of perk and flare to keep the club kids bouncing.  Such a pleasant surprise to hear hot and forward-thinkin music, rumbling through that Funktion One sound system!  My homies and I staked our claim to the mid-middle of the room and dialed into their sound for the full 2 hours.  The charismatic German duo in their mid-40’s, didn’t let up and kept the room slamming till the end…well played!  I can only hope more headliners that come to Beta in the future will take note that an underground sound can please both sides of the club culture if done right.

Keep it real for the people who know who you are, and make their way out to see you play.  Don’t focus on pleasing the folks that have no idea who you are, just to keep your job.  Pushing boundaries of what people expect can be a dangerous thing, but it is also the only thing that will keep the sounds of club culture moving forward, in an inspired direction.

PMS03 | Meagan’s Mix Pt.1 | Time For Trees

March 21, 2012 in Mixes, Photographic Memory Series

This mix is part one of three, as the name implies. They are made for my lovely fiancée Meagan in celebration of our more than four years together. We like to take road trips, and she is a lover of all things disco, funk and house, so I picked out 30 some odd tracks that reminded me of her, and began the process of crafting them into a cohesive set of music. This is part one of that mix.

She is an artist, and has created me countless drawings. I am not, I am a DJ, so this is how I show my affection. The mixes are really for us to listen to together when we go on road trips, which is a thing we like to do. The photo accompanying this mix was taken at Disneyland, while on a madcap adventure from Denver to California and back again. I have seen her dancing to and enjoying the mix, so I was successful in my attempts to represent her and us musically. Now you can listen to what it is like to be us together.

This mix is best listened to in a car, while you’re speeding down the road to somewhere, or something… whenever there is adventure to be had.

Events – Reviewed | Mike Huckaby @ BPL | 3.16.2012

March 19, 2012 in Events, Reviewed

After making his way to Colorado last year to play the Communikey Festival in Boulder, Mike Huckaby has since forged friendships with a number of the good folk out here and has been back numerous times with in the past year. I got to witness him for years as a fledgling raver in the midwest years ago, where he was on constant rotation through out Pittsburgh, Cleveland and his hometown of Detroit where he is still lives. He is well documented with his work with Native Instruments Development and his instruction work at the brilliant Youthville facility in Detroit. So aside from being a complete badass and legend of a producer/DJ, he is a really good guy too, so it’s easy to see why he is just plain fun to be around.

Fresh off his nomination for Westword, brother in arms John Templeton hosted Huck at his monthly Emote music night, in the Beatport Lounge this past Friday, put on by our friends at PUNCHIS. After a nice dinner out, we crewed up and headed to Beta, which on this night had legendary Andy C of RAM Records fame, dropping the slam on the main floor, hosted by Sub.Mission. An all around good music night at Beta…way to go Beta.

Upon Arrival, the very talented and very kind Benjamin Shreeves, was warming the room up with a nice mix of electro and steely techno. The BPL was still in it’s transient stage of the night, where a good amount of clubbers make the loop around from the main floor, stop in to check out the lounge upstairs and maybe hit the patio for some air.

Ben left off nicely for the dynamic live duo of Jahnavi Stenflo and Nathan Jantz aka, the Normal Ones. Everything about their live show ruled…it always does. The most obvious thing to note was their position in the room this night. Their gear and themselves were perched a top the cabinets to the left of the DJ booth (if you’re looking at the booth), which changed the landscape of the intimate room dramatically. It was a blast of fresh air , as the dance floor instantly became  wider with the length of the room in full use and the focus away from the usual. From there, the pair just laid a fantastic vibe of skeletal electro-ish 4/4 with quite varied, beautiful vocals. Nathans programming is incredibly clean and punchy, coupled with Jahnavis natural stage presence and enthusiastic vocals, they are a quality to the core and had the vibe slammin.

As their last track ended, the focus went immediately back to the DJ booth, where Huck dropped his first record to the sound of machine tinged  techno with pace. A perfect segue out of the two opening sets, he may have thrown a few people off expecting stuff more on the house tip. Being the professional he is, he knew where he was taking us…also on being a professional, he did not bat an eye at the countless (and I do mean countless) times the needle skipped on his records through out his entire set. Now I know Justin the sound guy over at Beta took offense to our review of the sound issues a few weeks ago at the Martin Buttrich event in the BPL and maybe he was in the right. However, Beta again appears amateur in the contrast of the accolades they tote of being the best. They have two bass bins pressed directly against the DJ Booth, when at peak time whether the sound is dialed in or not, will produce enough vibration to shake anything off that booth…drinks, laptops and especially needles. Thankfully Mike Huckaby is such a pro, he just plowed through and progressed his set from the techno he started with to saxophone laden Detroit house sound and kept the heads happy as could be, despite the constant sound issues.

Did not spend too much time downstairs, but did catch some of Andy C’s set which was as expected, really good. Between the gorgeous mild weather and the combined years experience in the house that night, a good time was had by all. From there, our group widdled down to three and we cabbed to afters organized again by Emote. Make Mistakes darling Tom ‘Attentat’ Kamholz was banging some no nonsense techno when we got there to a small crowd, in a great little space in the Santa Fe Arts district. A burst of friends and faces came by from the club, Huck among them. The end of Tommy’s set was the highlight of the music for me, getting back to his weirdo-deep-slightly eclectic brand of techno. The Traveling S#!+ Show – a new DJ/live trio featuring The Missing Link, Sequence and John Templeton came on to finish the night. Heard about 20 minutes of their set before taking off, but it was good and techy, with warm undertones.

All in all a night out with a load of laughs and smiles…and was a perfect primer to the madness of biking around in the sunshine and drinks, that was a St. Patricks Day on a Saturday, in rowdy Denver.

Woah, Easy Killer…it’s just a party.

March 10, 2012 in Uncategorized

Easy Killer will make their debut in Denver tonight, after a successful start to the series up in Boulder. The three main Killers, Ivy, Ejay and Khalib have invited good old Bones to join them, for a night of funk that will not breach the 120 bpm mark. Party is at the newly-leased-on-life 2200, doors open at 9:00. The vibe at these parties is ALWAYS supreme fun, loads of space to wiggle in between all those slow beats…be there or be Kil…
