Reviewed – Maya Jane Coles in Denver

Afterhours Anonymous (AA) has been synonymous with solid house and techno events the past few years in Denver. Colin Chmielewski and his crew have been busy spreading their love for music and the scene in town has been reaping in the benefits.

They brought in Maya Jane Coles (MJC) this past Saturday, hosting her three hour set at NORAD Dance Bar, which with in a year of opening has become a cornerstone of Denver’s electronic music scene. After these two entities joined forces a few months back for a rammed show featuring Pan Pot , the decision was made to sell pre sale only tickets for MJC, in order to to not max out capacity beyond room for attendeess to enjoy themselves. The upstairs was sold as a pre sale $10.00 ticket, that allowed access only to the lounge upstairs and the smoking patio, with a video stream and audio feed from the main room bumping through the Turbo Sound rig upstairs. Both pre sale options sold out prior to the show.

Upon what seemed to be a reasonably early arrival at 10:30, quickly it was obvious that people were excited to see the English starlette. The lounge and patio were already half full and the main room was almost three quarters full…no small feat for the time of night. Local good guy Hoang was laying down his last moments of a very stellar set, modern deep house with a pinch of techno. His set went down well, as evidenced by the jovial mood in the room. By the time she came on just after 11:00, Coles was playing to a room just about at full capacity. She laid down a load of chugging, sleek house music for the duration of the night, as she kept her little frame locked in a groove from behind the decks. A tad tougher sound then some of her productions, her professionalism was on display, as she mixed tightly through unrecognizable records. Rumors of her being under the weather and possibly not making it all the way through her slated three hour set were dispelled, as the energy in the room clearly helped her carry on through closing time.

From a dancer’s angle, it would have been nice to have more space to bust a move, without busting into someone else while doing so. The musc all night was ass shaking music, not so much heady techno to sway to. Aside from certain moments, one had little real estate to their own to bounce on…also getting from one side of the club to another was a lengthy journey through bodies, that usually take seconds. These however, are good complaints to have. That amount of people indicated to me, new blood in our thriving and growing scene which is vital and is something that AA do phenomenally well at drawing in. Kudos to the gracious staff at NORAD, and for opening the patio bar, that was a great decision. All in all a very fun night and another successful event from the AA/NORAD camps.

The night continued, as any good night should, into an after hours soiree, put on again by AA. Two Denver legends in DJ Sense and Make Mistakes own, Josh Ivy, guided a friendly bunch of folk into sun up with more quality music on the spectrum of house and techno. Another feather in the cap for the Afterhours Anonymous crew, they shine at these main/afters event combinations.
Check in with Afterhours Anonymous below and follow all the action, they have a busy summer of quality events lined up for Colorado. Photos courtesy of La Terraza Photography.

PMS14 | Counterfeit Aquatics | Radere

March 27, 2013 in Photographic Memory Series, Uncategorized

When my brother and I were children, my family would take frequent trips to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Looking back, I wonder how much of an influence those experiences might have had on the work I’ve done as Radere. The darkened rooms – designed to create a distinct visual contrast with the pretend underwater worlds we peered into, casting a pale aquatic ambience that strained to invade the shadowy corners – would seem to share something with the textured drones and idiosyncratic soundscapes that reside on my albums.

There was a sense of escape in those spaces, and I still try to visit every few years when my schedule permits. Now, I’ll take my headphones and provide my own soundtrack to the experience; but as a boy, the dull echoes of families exploring the descending walkway that took you through the Atlantic Coral Reef and Shark Alley displays created a peculiar tension which I found intoxicating.

This mix was recorded using a stack of vinyl, a pair of Technics turntables, an Allen & Heath mixer, a Strymon El Capiston dTape Echo and a Moogerfooger MF-105M.

I hope you enjoy it.

PMS12 | Deep Roots Redux | Revy

Sometimes it’s important to take a look back to your roots. This photo from one of many outdoor gatherings in Idaho triggers a bit of nostalgia and homesickness for me, but more importantly, a yearning for growth. Preparing the mix brought on some vivid daydreams while I submersed myself in a sublime abyss of sounds, driven by an ebb and flow of deep atmospheres and synapse tickling grooves.

PMS11 | All I Want For Christmas Is Worldwide Anarchist Communism | Attentat

December 13, 2012 in Mixes, Photographic Memory Series

When looking for a picture to use for my Photographic Memories Series submission this seemed the most appropriate for obvious reasons. It’s almost Christmas; a time of year so easy to love and hate with equal passion. Easy to love because, it’s nice to spend time with friends and family, and easy to hate because, well, it’s Christmas. By the look on my face it appears I embraced distaste for the celebration of baby Jesus. This is insightful because I remember myself being a greedy little bastard at that age.

I remember, once, my selfishness got the best of me, and I attempted to clandestinely open a gift while hiding behind a rocking chair in my parent’s living room, only to be caught by one of my siblings with a handful of brand new LEGO pieces in my sticky paws. I used to beg to open gifts before Christmas day, and sometimes my parents would give in, mostly because I wouldn’t leave them alone until I got my way.

When I found this photo it gave me hope I wasn’t always a greedy little tub of fat; a pushy whiner that pressured people until they gave in to his demands. If only I knew why I was wearing a look of disgust and disappointment? Is my grimace a sign of my future attitude towards Christmas and popular culture? An attitude containing heavy doses of cynicism and disgust aimed at the obsession capitalist society places on the accumulation of material goods? Maybe, it’s a look saying, “I just want to be dancing and communing with people in a dark and sweaty warehouse.”  Possibly, I’m just freaked out by the fact I’m sitting on a creepy guy’s lap hoping for toys? Perhaps, an early awareness of the humiliating nature of this degrading system of bondage, and wage slavery humans have so happily embraced? I’m not a fan of Christmas because it perpetuates the hyper-individualism, greed, and selfishness inherent in the capitalist system. This year however, I would like three things for Christmas, (1) worldwide anarchist communism, (2) looting and redistribution of the Christmas stockings of the rich (3) a good rave to keep the people moving through the night. Please Santa! I promise I was good this year!

Event Review – Chris Liebing at NORAD 11.16.12

November 28, 2012 in Events, Reviewed

Chris Liebing’s really basic performance set up

Watch this video and tell us you would not want to check out someone navigating through all that gear…

The man behind his own CLR fame and podcast made his North American debut in Colorado and most definitely left his mark with the Denver faithful…rumor has it even some New Mexico and Utah faithful as well, taking advantage of the opportunity to catch the German legend in action. We happened to walk in the same time Chris was arriving and the first thing that struck me was the heigth of the man…for some reason I depicted him as a giant, German, tattooed badass but in reality he’s quite small in stature. Still badass and  his legendary warm personality and presence was evident from the get.

The booking did not go without it’s share of hype and by the time we arrived at NORAD Dance Bar the main room was half full, just before 11:00. Denver native Daegon (Chad Kaska) was playing his live set that he has been honing in across multiple European tours over the last few years. The young producer suffered a bit from some muffled audio, whether from his sound card or the way the engineer had room was dialed in at the time. Either way, the floor was packed with bodies slightly wiggling, as his brand of minmal techno banged on with the occasional cut in bass to develop a bit of tension.

As Liebing went on to a spirited response from the crowd, he began his three hours of an intimate, flirtatious and pounding experience of interaction with the room. The sound magically became much louder and clear, as he worked through loop after loop of the modern German sound of club techno. Though three quarters of his set was not all that varied from a pattern of kick drum, snare and breakdown, it was hard to walk away from the floor, as the charisma of Liebing was absolutely infectious. He looked like he was easily having the most fun in the room which is quite refreshing, especially in the genre of techno, which can be fairly pretentious and too serious at times. It was towards the last hour of his set where he brought in some depth and pads, creating a warmer vibe to finish the night off, dropping Marcel Dettmans slick remix of the  Junior Boy’s track “Work’ to great effect.

Shout out to Afterhours Anonymous for taking yet another leap for our scene and delivering. Also needs to be noted, the techno ladies of Denver represented very well, which again is refreshing to see at a harder techno show.

From our homie Colin, the man behind Afterhours Anonymous:

Talking to Chris after the show, I said
“Tell all your techno superstar buddies that Denver’s legit.” He said, “It definitely is and I will!” He really enjoyed the crowd and the club and his time here. This coming from a guy who regularly plays festivals with 8-10K people in front of him!

Thanks to Kristen Tyler for the photos.

Christmas eve….what a wonderful night. The one day a year my mother would buy me McDonalds. Every year it was always the same order from me. Then 19 years ago I heard techno for the first time. I used to like Mc Nuggets, now I like techno.

PMS08 | Hello Again | Jason Graves

August 16, 2012 in Mixes, Photographic Memory Series

As I was searching for inspiration one day, I wandered down a random ally and found this weather beaten door with rusty hinges and amazing layers of texture.  Now 14 years later, each time I look at this photo I recall a different memory from the years that I spent living in Chicago.  Much like when I listen to a song or track depending on what I pay attention to in the composition, it will trigger a different feeling, emotion or memory each time I listen to it. With this mix I intended to make a connection between the textures in the photo with the different textures in the music and how when stimulated by sound or imagery the vast collection of memories that are locked away inside our minds, can be recalled and or rediscovered instantly like they were never even forgotten…much like having a photographic memory.

Make Mistakes Presents : YESRAD @ NORAD Patio

July 13, 2012 in Events

“…hot town, summer in the city
back of my neck getting burnt and gritty.
there for, please join us on the patio
for a little summer shimmy.”

…ok, so we’ll stick to beats but that’s what you’re gonna get. Summer jams and pleasant techno, no cover at the door and Happy Hour prices all night. Say yes to Rad and continue your weekend Mistakin’ with…

Papyrus 9:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Ivy 8:00 – 9:00
Roy England 7:00 – 8:00
steofan 6:00 – 7:00
Seth Nichols 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Music on the patio goes 5:00-10:00, we’ll happily move inside from 10:00- 2:00 and bring the techno proper if the situation presents itself (i.e. people still partying).

This is also a bitter sweet send off to our beloved Roy England. He is on to another chapter in Florida, so please come and wish him well ! Also also, this is our induction gig for the mighty Ivy into the crew, not like he was never not welcome, but none the less we are excited about it. And the first Mistakes party in a spell for our quiet, melodic Mistaker, Papyrus ala Ricky Boykin. Recent recruit, the badass that is Seth Nichols will be crate diggin’ for the open…rumor has it a down tempo, “Bonobo” type eclecticism, so you really should not miss that, right ? Expect a flirtatious blend of house and techno, from one of the four out of five bald guys dj’n, steofan.  We are all really excited to spend the day with all you lovely people and will do our best to make all the right mistakes.

Thanks to our brother in Baltimore, Joshua Smith, for the flier. We wish you and Tommy were here, miss you both.

PMS05 | Lessons Learned | Benjamin Shreves

May 25, 2012 in Mixes, Photographic Memory Series

Our fifth Photographic Memory mix comes from another kindred spirit with a raw taste in techno, techno’s little brother, Benjamin Shreves. As with our last PMS installment from Mr. Corder, Benjamin is a shy one himself and decided it would be better for us to do the talking.

Well…what looks to be a stage with some cables, a few cashed Coronas, assorted speakers and a CDJ has inspired Ben to put together a brooding mix of the techno music. Ben is all vinyl, all banging, all the time and this peek into his world is an honest interpretation of his view on music. Apparently some mistakes were made and a few lessons learned along the way, which by all accounts around our offices, is what life is all about. Benjamin is in Berlin for the summer season on a journey of sorts, so we wish him all the best and look forward to hearing his various purchases from Hard Wax.
