PMS03 | Meagan’s Mix Pt.1 | Time For Trees

March 21, 2012 in Mixes, Photographic Memory Series

This mix is part one of three, as the name implies. They are made for my lovely fiancée Meagan in celebration of our more than four years together. We like to take road trips, and she is a lover of all things disco, funk and house, so I picked out 30 some odd tracks that reminded me of her, and began the process of crafting them into a cohesive set of music. This is part one of that mix.

She is an artist, and has created me countless drawings. I am not, I am a DJ, so this is how I show my affection. The mixes are really for us to listen to together when we go on road trips, which is a thing we like to do. The photo accompanying this mix was taken at Disneyland, while on a madcap adventure from Denver to California and back again. I have seen her dancing to and enjoying the mix, so I was successful in my attempts to represent her and us musically. Now you can listen to what it is like to be us together.

This mix is best listened to in a car, while you’re speeding down the road to somewhere, or something… whenever there is adventure to be had.

Attentat’s Points of Departure

March 20, 2012 in News, Politics

Today we bring you the exciting news that our Make Mistakes cohort Attentat has just recently launched his own blog bringing to the surface heady techno mixes and political rantings on the state of the world. We know you already follow about as many blogs as you can handle, but we think adding this one to your list will be well worth your time. Check out Attentat’s first post Songs For Building Barricades, a hot mix of proper techno with a highly enticing track list. Keep your eyes peeled for new mixes from Attentat and others to come, while also expanding your mind through engaging articles on politics and the state of the techno community. Sure partying is fun and techno music makes for a good time, but Attentat’s Points of Depature is sure to remind us that in these times of tumultuous change it is vitally important to think about and participate in the world around us in an informed and engaged way, while also getting our groove on.

Events – Reviewed | Mike Huckaby @ BPL | 3.16.2012

March 19, 2012 in Events, Reviewed

After making his way to Colorado last year to play the Communikey Festival in Boulder, Mike Huckaby has since forged friendships with a number of the good folk out here and has been back numerous times with in the past year. I got to witness him for years as a fledgling raver in the midwest years ago, where he was on constant rotation through out Pittsburgh, Cleveland and his hometown of Detroit where he is still lives. He is well documented with his work with Native Instruments Development and his instruction work at the brilliant Youthville facility in Detroit. So aside from being a complete badass and legend of a producer/DJ, he is a really good guy too, so it’s easy to see why he is just plain fun to be around.

Fresh off his nomination for Westword, brother in arms John Templeton hosted Huck at his monthly Emote music night, in the Beatport Lounge this past Friday, put on by our friends at PUNCHIS. After a nice dinner out, we crewed up and headed to Beta, which on this night had legendary Andy C of RAM Records fame, dropping the slam on the main floor, hosted by Sub.Mission. An all around good music night at Beta…way to go Beta.

Upon Arrival, the very talented and very kind Benjamin Shreeves, was warming the room up with a nice mix of electro and steely techno. The BPL was still in it’s transient stage of the night, where a good amount of clubbers make the loop around from the main floor, stop in to check out the lounge upstairs and maybe hit the patio for some air.

Ben left off nicely for the dynamic live duo of Jahnavi Stenflo and Nathan Jantz aka, the Normal Ones. Everything about their live show ruled…it always does. The most obvious thing to note was their position in the room this night. Their gear and themselves were perched a top the cabinets to the left of the DJ booth (if you’re looking at the booth), which changed the landscape of the intimate room dramatically. It was a blast of fresh air , as the dance floor instantly became  wider with the length of the room in full use and the focus away from the usual. From there, the pair just laid a fantastic vibe of skeletal electro-ish 4/4 with quite varied, beautiful vocals. Nathans programming is incredibly clean and punchy, coupled with Jahnavis natural stage presence and enthusiastic vocals, they are a quality to the core and had the vibe slammin.

As their last track ended, the focus went immediately back to the DJ booth, where Huck dropped his first record to the sound of machine tinged  techno with pace. A perfect segue out of the two opening sets, he may have thrown a few people off expecting stuff more on the house tip. Being the professional he is, he knew where he was taking us…also on being a professional, he did not bat an eye at the countless (and I do mean countless) times the needle skipped on his records through out his entire set. Now I know Justin the sound guy over at Beta took offense to our review of the sound issues a few weeks ago at the Martin Buttrich event in the BPL and maybe he was in the right. However, Beta again appears amateur in the contrast of the accolades they tote of being the best. They have two bass bins pressed directly against the DJ Booth, when at peak time whether the sound is dialed in or not, will produce enough vibration to shake anything off that booth…drinks, laptops and especially needles. Thankfully Mike Huckaby is such a pro, he just plowed through and progressed his set from the techno he started with to saxophone laden Detroit house sound and kept the heads happy as could be, despite the constant sound issues.

Did not spend too much time downstairs, but did catch some of Andy C’s set which was as expected, really good. Between the gorgeous mild weather and the combined years experience in the house that night, a good time was had by all. From there, our group widdled down to three and we cabbed to afters organized again by Emote. Make Mistakes darling Tom ‘Attentat’ Kamholz was banging some no nonsense techno when we got there to a small crowd, in a great little space in the Santa Fe Arts district. A burst of friends and faces came by from the club, Huck among them. The end of Tommy’s set was the highlight of the music for me, getting back to his weirdo-deep-slightly eclectic brand of techno. The Traveling S#!+ Show – a new DJ/live trio featuring The Missing Link, Sequence and John Templeton came on to finish the night. Heard about 20 minutes of their set before taking off, but it was good and techy, with warm undertones.

All in all a night out with a load of laughs and smiles…and was a perfect primer to the madness of biking around in the sunshine and drinks, that was a St. Patricks Day on a Saturday, in rowdy Denver.

Woah, Easy Killer…it’s just a party.

March 10, 2012 in Uncategorized

Easy Killer will make their debut in Denver tonight, after a successful start to the series up in Boulder. The three main Killers, Ivy, Ejay and Khalib have invited good old Bones to join them, for a night of funk that will not breach the 120 bpm mark. Party is at the newly-leased-on-life 2200, doors open at 9:00. The vibe at these parties is ALWAYS supreme fun, loads of space to wiggle in between all those slow beats…be there or be Kil…

Make Mistakes Massive : Exclusive : Interview with Tonka

March 6, 2012 in Features, Music

Tonka is some what of a legend on the Resident Advisor forums, his extremely sarcastic yet hilariously accurate take on Dance Music has been pulling chuckles for a few years now. He was encouraged by other RA users to start his own blog, so he did, the Weekly Review of Dance Music. Seeing as he makes us laugh, it was a no brainer to reach out and befriend him…we are already planning vacations in London and Denver. What follows is a look into the mind of a fellow music lover…of a sophisticated force of reasoning…utter honesty in response to mediocre questions….

(some possibly offensive language, please be advised)

Questions in bold, answers in italic.

-This interview will most likely introduce you to people who have no clue who you are. What would you like them to know about Tonka?  I am a young Great British man who lives in London. I am handsome. I am 5’11”, slim, have short brown hair, blue eyes and am trimmed and tidy down below (balls and surrounding area of my 6 1/2″ uncut penis).Tonka is not my real name. It is a pseudonym I use for writing my world famous dance music blog, the Weekly Review of Dance Music, or WRDM as I abbreviate it to. WRDM is the leading voice for dance music truth and exclusive interviews with the clubbing stars, past and present. This is MY BLOG and if you want to Tweet me you can do so by ringing this number: @tonkawrdm - alternatively you can send me saucy emails to tonkawrdm@gmail.com

-What do you think is wrong with America?  I’ve been to America once and didn’t find anything wrong with it at all – and I did look. If I were to make one observation it would be to say that everything is bigger where you are. I felt like an ant walking around Gulliver’s Kingdom with magnifying glasses strapped to my eyes. The cars are bigger, the streets are wider, the bellies are fatter, you get more filling in your sandwich, the women are bustier and American men talk louder, even in libraries.

-As we  move into our 30′s, what do you think needs to happen to keep the geezers hanging with the kids in harmony, in regards to the Electronic Music scene?  I turned 31 in November last year (Nov 30th if you want to send me a card this year) so I know all about being in my 30s. I think its essential for people in their 30s to continue clubbing because the younger generation need someone screaming in their ears to tell them that an old Strictly Rhythm track is being played. Kids need to know when a contemporary DJ is playing old tunes. That’s not being patronising, they just do.

- …the last time you hung out w a page three girl by ‘yourself’?  I’ve never f***** a Page Three girl but I have had a blow job from a flat chested prostitute called Donna in an alley way. She made me wear a condom and it was one of those times where you c** but you’re not fully hard. Know what I mean? My friend, who’s turn it was after me, sent me a news paper clipping a couple of years ago of a story involving a local prostitute called Donna who’d been sentenced to 18 months in jail for petty theft, breaking and entering and grievous bodily harm. It turns out she was a smack head who was robbing people and selling her body to pay for more drugs and food for her 2 year old girl. To this day I wonder what she spent my five pounds on.

-What about America is still a mystery to you?  Mount Rushmore. The FACT that you can buy an AK47 from your local butcher. Silicon Valley (is it really a valley made out of internet?). The World Series of baseball being contested only by regional teams (why don’t you invite other nations?). Hugh Laurie’s face and Hugh Laurie’s accent in House. Denver (it is my dream for someone to pay for me to fly to Denver and put me up for a long weekend so that I can review the local dance scene and promote the place on my world famous blog, the Weekly Review of Dance Music).

-Football match: who’d win, Chelsea or U.S. National Team?  At the moment your national team would probably annihilate Chelsea because they’re an absolute shambles of a team. I’m not a fan of Chelsea but AVB has to go – and will do at the end of the season. Know what I mean?- Uppers or downers?Uppers. I don’t know what it is but there’s something about ecstasy that really makes me feel good about myself, the people around me, my future and life in general.

-Whats with the Royal Arms of England?  Is that a pub?

-If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want?  I would demand to be Snoop Doggy Dogg in 1993-What kind of people do you dislike?  I hate people who don’t like dance music. Really. I fucking hate people who can’t get down to a 4/4 beat. Dance music is all about love, peace and harmony. True togetherness and unconditional forgiveness. One world, one mind, one beating heart. So if I find out that someone doesn’t like house music I just f*cking HATE them. No debate.

-What makes you angry?  Early Metallica, butternut squash and people who say Nicolas Jaar is a modern day Mozart – he’s good but he just plays slow music even slower…with a live orchestra or something.

-Favorite item at the chipper?  What is a chipper?

-Worst clubbing experience?  There was this one time at the Egg in London with my mate Robbo where we took about 9 pills and none of them worked.  We were both f*cking livid.

-What makes a good DJ set for you?  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (now). I could be in a club listening to the DJ tapping his fingers on the platter for 7 hours and if I’ve taken some good ecstasy E tablets it’ll sound good. I’ve had emails from people telling me that’s the stupidest thing they’ve ever heard in their entire life but its 100% true and 95% right. Saying that, I would suggest Ricardo Villalobos @ Club Fabric in London playing a steady progression from 112bpm through to the late 130bpms, ending with a ‘one more’ stomper at around 145bpm would be a perfect night.

-Tiesto is said to be the highest paid DJ, with his least amount with his nightly range being $50-250K. Thoughts on this fact according to kgb answers?  Tiesto is worth every penny he makes. Personally, I hate the music he plays and he is a good-average mixer but what would you do? He’s being offered all this cash money to personally deliver shit directly into the ears of teenagers in aircraft hangers and football stadiums…I would do exactly the same. There is a big thing in dance music about being cool and underground, and I hate that as much as I hate stadium trance. Read the forums in RA. Read the articles in mnml ssgs (Minimal Messages). Read the reviews in LWE. ‘Pretentious’ does not do these lumberjack shirt wearing, hair-cut obsessed toads justice.

People forget that what dance music boils down to is the dance floor. When you’re on the dance floor, in love with the world and DANCING you do not stop to think “f*ck me, why didn’t Todd Terje stick a bit more attack on that hi-hat. Too sharp.” All you want to do is get higher, hug everyone around you and carry on dancing. Nobody really gives a fuck whether Andrew Ryce endorses shit or not. No offence to Andrew Ryce but I just went on LWE and his was the first name I saw. I don’t read many dance reviews anymore. I trust my ears and feet.

-What is your take on all the Grammy fall out in the EDM community?  Did you read the Philip Sherburne piece in Spin? Thoughts?  I did. Oh my gosh, indeed. It was embarrassing. Anything that gets people into nightclubs has to be a good thing though – expose the underground, encourage those who may have only got into dance music through seeing Skrillex at the Grammys and accept all. House music is for all. Anyone who wants to keep it underground and select are completely missing the point.

-Do you ever feel island sickness living in England?  A lot. I often consider “breaking” America but I don’t think my wife would like me leaving her and our 9 month old son to follow my American Dream and launch WRDM in the USA – however large the demand for it.

-How often do you travel about in Europe for music destinations? What are some of your favorite places/experiences?  I’ve been to Sonar twice and had two special experiences. I’m not a massive fan of tent festivals so I recommend Sonar because you stay in a nice apartment in Barcelona, go to the university during the day for local Spanish artists and DJs playing low key stuff, get a bite to eat in the evening and then get the Sonar bus to a massive fucking rave up outside the city. Last time I went I watched the sun come up whilst Ricardo Villalobos went all Balearic.

-Ever been to America? If so, most enjoyable experience? Least enjoyable?  I went to New York once. I got food poisoning HERE and didn’t leave my bed for three days. I need to return one day soon and do America properly. Strange as this may sound, I enjoyed the American accent a lot.

-Do you watch Southpark?  I do watch South Park, you silly goose! ‘Scott Tenorman Must Die’ is my favourite episode. Scott should not have sold Cartman his pubes.

-What is one mistake you regret making? One you are proud of making?  Selling my belt drive decks and mixer in the year 2001 was a mistake. I could have been earning upwards of $250k and playing b2b sets with Tiesto now. I was THAT good.  Saying that, I now have Ableton Live. I make lounge-core mixes and minimal hard house tracks that are going to blow up in 2012. Blow up in a good way.

Our thanks to Tonka for his time, please be sure to check his blog, it’s hilarious.       http://tonkawrdm.blogspot.com/

Reviewed | Martin Buttrich | PUNCHIS & AA/MP Denver 2.24.2012

March 5, 2012 in Events, Reviewed

Good times out on this one.

It started by Sammy and I meeting our brother in arms John Templeton, the lovely Zaira and Herr Buttrich at Lous Food Place around 9:30…love that place. A nice intimate sit down with someone I have admired for years was perfect…more perfect, as Martin turned out not to be the steely German I projected of him, with his clinical productions and all.  Instead, he is a happy-go-lucky ‘bro’, who laughed, knocked back brews, joked on his local football team and spoke modestly of gigs in Ibiza and the Caribbean (where he fell off a stage and broke his foot a while back, there for could not snowboard with us while in town).

From Lou’s, we all ran back to our house around the corner for a quick chill, then on to Blake Street where the BPL awaited us. Since the advent of 18+ upstairs in the BPL, attendance has been up on every new visit. Lines are a bit blurred as to who is passing through or who is there for the specific music that is played, but regardless the room has benefitted from more enthusiastic bodies in it. PUNCHIS resident Diizel was on when we arrived, playing a varied selection of not so varied tech house to a packed room. It worked though as woops and cheers rang out as he smoothly mixed through until our German friend had his laptop set up and ready to rip.

Martin’s live set was solid as expected. He ran through bits of his vast catalog in an hour and a half.  His remix of Luca Bacchetti & Davide Squillace’s “Around The Bay”,  another of his remix’s,  ”Telesto” on Systematic making appearances.  These tracks strike a nice balance between warm tones with playful attitudes and straight dance floor functionality.  The room stayed full for the most part…even after the sound cut out THREE times, which I really don’t understand as high profile as Beta is.

On to the ‘AM’ segment of the night, a gang of us headed to the RiNo warehouse complex about 5 minutes north of Beta. A few parties have been held there, this was the first time I made it to one.  Afterhours Anonymous and Mahesh Presents hosted the event, which was impeccably produced. Turbo Sound was dialed in, a full bar, massive visuals and plenty of room to dance. The vibe was upbeat from the start, the tall and talented Bones (ala Nick Wilson) was laying down his birthday set nicely, blending his brand of pleasant tech house to an already well populated room. Martin came on for his second live set of the evening, which apparently he did not know about until he landed in Denver. He had no issues with it and honestly, it worked better than his club set.  The set was a lot more stripped back, chugging and hypnotic. Take a listen to his track “Back It Up”, this is what the set sounded like in some form through out, simple and effective. Denver’s own Little Mike closed the night out with a good demonstration of why he is holding his own in Berlin currently. Fairly safe records more on the tech house tip, but well mixed and programmed. The party literally felt like an extension of the club, as it was so well produced and lured in a bulk of the club goers itself. Hopefully the sound guys at Beta were lured in as well to learn a thing or two…with out a Function 1, the sound system at the afters was hands down better and did not cut out once.

Hats off to PUNCHIS, AA/MP and all others that participated in bringing Martin and making it a fun night out.  Hopefully we’ll see more of him as he seems to be happily based in Los Angeles at the moment.

Upcoming AA/MP shows: Radio Slave 3.24.12  http://www.facebook.com/events/361177960582197/

Bones set from this night

Martin Buttrich: 1/2 California Bro, 1/2 Steely German...all around great dude.
